Kobe is a long, narrow city squeezed between Osaka Bay and the Rokko Mountains, which rise steeply behind it. It opened as a treaty port in 1868, and its foreign merchants left a hillside district, Kitano, of European-style mansions, churches and cafés. Nankinmachi is a compact Chinatown. At the harbour, the red Port Tower and the Meriken Park waterfront look out over the bay.
A cable car and ropeway climb Mount Rokko for views of the city lights, and beyond the ridge the hot-spring town of Arima Onsen is one of the oldest in Japan. Nunobiki Falls and its herb garden are above the city, the Nada district is a major sake-brewing area, and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, runs towards Awaji Island. Himeji Castle is about fifty kilometres west.
Kobe beef, from Tajima cattle raised in Hyogo, is the most famous product, served as steak and in teppanyaki restaurants. Spring cherry blossom and autumn leaves colour the Rokko hills. The city also has a long tradition of bakeries, cakes and cafés, and a lively Chinese food street.
