Hilton Head Island lies off the coast of South Carolina's Lowcountry, a barrier island shaped like a shoe, with about twenty kilometres of Atlantic beach on one side and salt marshes on the other. It is named for Captain William Hilton, who sighted its headland in 1663. Resort communities such as Sea Pines are planned among live oaks and pines, and the red-and-white striped lighthouse at Harbour Town is the island's emblem.
The island's history includes Mitchelville, founded in 1862 by freed enslaved people as the first self-governing town of its kind in the United States, and Gullah Geechee culture, with its own language, crafts and cooking, endures in the Lowcountry. Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, near the bridge, has trails among marsh birds, and Daufuskie Island can be reached by boat. Savannah, Georgia, and Beaufort, South Carolina, are both close.
A Lowcountry boil of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes is the local feast, with shrimp and grits, oysters, she-crab soup and red rice. Sea turtles nest on the beaches from May to October. Winters are mild, and summers are humid.
