Fairbanks lies in the broad Tanana Valley of interior Alaska, on the Chena River, roughly 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. It began as a trading post in 1901 and boomed after gold was found nearby in 1902; its mining past is shown at Pioneer Park, with its old buildings and sternwheeler. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is home to the Museum of the North, with Alaska Native art and natural history.
The long days of summer keep the sky light well into the night around the solstice, while from late August to April dark skies and clear air make Fairbanks one of the best places to see the northern lights. Chena Hot Springs, to the east, has a natural geothermal pool, the trans-Alaska pipeline crosses the country nearby, and Denali National Park lies to the south-west. The Dalton Highway heads north towards the Arctic Circle.
Wild Alaskan salmon, reindeer sausage, halibut and sourdough pancakes appear on menus, and birch syrup is tapped in the forests of the interior. Summers can be warm, reaching the high twenties Celsius, and winters are very cold, with temperatures often below minus thirty. In March, sculptors carve giant blocks of ice for an art championship.
