Estes Park lies at about 2,300 metres in a valley of the Colorado Rockies, along the Big Thompson River and beside Lake Estes. It is the main eastern entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. The town centre has timber-fronted shops, a riverwalk and the Stanley Hotel, a white Colonial Revival hotel on a hill that opened in 1909 and inspired Stephen King's novel The Shining.
In Rocky Mountain National Park, Trail Ridge Road climbs above the tree line to more than 3,700 metres, and trails lead to alpine lakes such as Bear Lake, Dream Lake and Emerald Lake below Hallett Peak. Longs Peak, at 4,346 metres, is the park's highest summit. Elk, bighorn sheep and moose are often seen, and in autumn the bugling of rutting elk can be heard around town. Grand Lake lies across the Continental Divide on the western side.
Saltwater taffy shops, bakeries and restaurants serving trout and elk burgers line the main street. Summer is the main season, with cool nights, winters are snowy and close the high roads, and late September brings golden aspen to the valleys.
