Dortmund grew on coal, steel and beer, and its centre was rebuilt after the war around the medieval churches of St Reinold, St Peter and St Mary. The Dortmunder U, a former brewery tower crowned with a gold letter U, now houses an arts centre. The Westfalenpark has gardens and a TV tower with a viewing platform, and the Westfalenstadion, home of Borussia Dortmund, is among the largest football stadiums in Germany.

Zeche Zollern, a former colliery with an art-nouveau machine hall, tells the story of the coal era, and Phoenix Lake, a flooded steelworks site, is now a lakeside district for walking and sailing. The Ruhr's other cities, Essen, Bochum and Duisburg, lie close by, and the Sauerland hills rise to the south-east, with the Möhne lake and forests.

Dortmund's beer, a pale Export lager, was once brewed in huge quantities, and pubs still serve it alongside currywurst and Westphalian ham with dark pumpernickel bread. An enormous Christmas tree built from many hundreds of spruces stands on the Hansaplatz each winter. Summers are mild and winters grey and cool.
