Denali National Park and Preserve covers about six million acres of interior Alaska, a landscape of braided rivers, tundra, spruce forest and glaciers spread across the Alaska Range. The mountain itself, 6,190 metres high, is the highest in North America. It often hides in cloud, so a clear view of the summit is a matter of luck.

A single road, about 150 kilometres long, runs west from the park entrance into the interior, past tundra and valleys, and ends at Kantishna. Grizzly bears, wolves, caribou, moose and Dall sheep live along it, and the park keeps a kennel of working sled dogs. Wonder Lake and Polychrome Pass are among the best-known viewpoints. The Alaska Railroad and the Parks Highway pass the entrance, with Fairbanks to the north-east.

Salmon, halibut, reindeer sausage and sourdough pancakes are served at the lodges along the highway. Around midsummer the days last almost round the clock, in late August the tundra turns red and gold, and from autumn to early spring the northern lights can be seen. Winters are deep and cold.
