Cocoa Beach occupies a barrier island on Florida's Atlantic coast, with the ocean on one side and the Banana River lagoon on the other, east of Orlando. Its long beach is among the best surf breaks on the east coast, and the Cocoa Beach Pier reaches out over the waves. The surfer Kelly Slater, an eleven-time world champion, grew up here.

Kennedy Space Center, on Merritt Island to the north, is a launch site for American spaceflight, with rockets lifting off from nearby Cape Canaveral, and launches can be seen across the water from the beach. Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge protect miles of undeveloped coast and lagoon, home to manatees, dolphins and wading birds. Port Canaveral, a cruise port, lies just north.

Fresh fish, shrimp, fish tacos and key lime pie fill the beachside restaurants. Sea turtles nest on the beach from May to October. Orlando is about an hour's drive west, and the weather is warm for most of the year.
