The Tennessee River makes a bend at Chattanooga, close to the Georgia border, in a valley between Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. It was a major railroad junction, and the 1941 song Chattanooga Choo Choo made its name famous. The Tennessee Aquarium stands on the riverfront, and the Walnut Street Bridge, a pedestrian bridge from 1891, crosses the river to a district of parks and cafés.
On Lookout Mountain, the Incline Railway, one of the steepest passenger railways in the world, climbs to the viewpoints of Point Park, where Civil War soldiers fought the Battle Above the Clouds in 1863. Nearby, Ruby Falls is a waterfall deep inside a cave, and Rock City has rock gardens with views over several states. The Chickamauga and Chattanooga battlefields form the oldest national military park.
Southern cooking runs from fried chicken and barbecue to cornbread and biscuits with gravy, and the Moon Pie, a marshmallow sandwich cookie, was first baked in Chattanooga. The city has a number of craft breweries and distilleries. Spring brings dogwoods, summers are hot and humid, and autumn colour on the ridges is bright.
