Experience the best of Camden

Camden sits on Penobscot Bay in Maine's Midcoast, where the Camden Hills come down to the harbour. A small river drops over a falls into the harbour, which is crowded with yachts and traditional schooners; windjammers sail from here on cruises among the islands. The village has brick shops, white clapboard houses, and a library and amphitheatre overlooking the water. The 1957 film Peyton Place was shot in the town.

Camden Hills State Park rises right behind the village: a road and trails lead to the summit of Mount Battie, with a stone tower and a view over harbour, bay and islands. Mount Megunticook is the highest of the hills, and the Camden Snow Bowl, a small ski area with ocean views, hosts the National Toboggan Championships each February. Rockland, with the Farnsworth Art Museum and a breakwater lighthouse, lies to the south, and Acadia National Park to the north-east.

Lobster, steamed or in a roll, clam chowder, wild blueberry pie and whoopie pies fill the village's menus. Summer is for sailing, and in October the Camden Hills turn red and gold. Winters are snowy, with the Penobscot Bay islands lying quiet under white skies.
