Busuanga lies at the northern end of Palawan, the westernmost province of the Philippines, and is the largest island in the Calamian group. Rolling grassland and low hills cover much of its interior, which gives it a more open look than most Philippine islands, and its coast is cut by bays, mangroves and limestone cliffs. Coron, the main town, lies on the south coast, facing Coron Island across a narrow strait, and the airport is near Busuanga town.
In Coron Bay, Japanese supply ships sunk by American aircraft in September 1944 lie on the seabed and are popular wreck dives. Calauit Island, to the north-west, is a wildlife sanctuary where giraffes and zebras brought from Kenya in 1977 roam the savanna alongside native Calamian deer. Culion Island lies to the south, and the Tagbanua people have lived in these islands for centuries.
Seafood rules the table: grilled fish, squid, crab and shrimp, often eaten at simple beachside restaurants, with kinilaw and rice. The dry months run from November to April, with calm seas and clear water, and the rains and typhoon winds come from May to October.
