Panay is one of the larger islands of the Philippines, in the western Visayas, and has four provinces: Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Iloilo. A line of mountains runs down its western side, rice plains fill the centre and east, and the coasts have long beaches and fishing towns. Iloilo City, its largest city, keeps old churches and colonial-era streets.
Miag-ao Church, in Iloilo province, is a World Heritage fortress-church of golden stone with a carved facade, and Molo Church and Jaro Cathedral in Iloilo City are other old churches. The island's northern tip is the gateway to Boracay, a small island of white sand. Kalibo hosts the Ati-Atihan festival each January, Roxas City is known for seafood and capiz shell crafts, and Antique has mountain forests and quiet beaches.
La Paz batchoy, a noodle soup with pork, offal and crushed crackling, is Iloilo's signature dish, and pancit molo is a soup of dumplings. The dry season runs from December to May, and the wet months from June to November bring typhoons and heavy rain. Aklan makes piña, a fine handwoven cloth of pineapple-leaf fibre.
