Experience the best of Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines, a dense bayside city of Spanish colonial walls, old churches, jeepneys and the historic Chinatown of Binondo.

Manila stretches along the eastern shore of Manila Bay, at the mouth of the Pasig River. Intramuros, the walled city built by the Spanish from 1571, is the historic heart, with cobbled streets, the cathedral and the stone church of San Agustín, the country's oldest stone church and a World Heritage site. Fort Santiago, at the river mouth, is where the national hero José Rizal was held before his execution in 1896.

Rizal Park, also called Luneta, is a large green space beside the bay, and the National Museum of Fine Arts shows Juan Luna's huge painting Spoliarium. Binondo, the old Chinese quarter, is full of food stalls and shops, and the Quiapo Church draws crowds of devotees. Roxas Boulevard follows the bay for sunsets, Corregidor Island lies about fifty kilometres away, and the Taal Volcano is south of the city.

Adobo, meat stewed in vinegar and garlic, sinigang, a sour tamarind soup, lumpia spring rolls and halo-halo, a dessert of shaved ice, beans and fruit, are the staples, with calamansi squeezed over most dishes. Siopao steamed buns come from Binondo, and the rains arrive in force from June to October.
