Experience the best of Puerto Princesa
Puerto Princesa is the capital of Palawan in the western Philippines, a gateway to the Underground River and the islands of Honda Bay.

Puerto Princesa lies on the central east coast of Palawan, a long island in the western Philippines between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. The city is a spread-out place of markets, a harbour front and a cathedral, and it covers a huge area of forest, mangroves and coast. Its Baywalk is lined with open-air grills, and Plaza Cuartel recalls a wartime massacre of prisoners in 1944.
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a World Heritage Site about eighty kilometres north-west, holds a river that flows through a limestone cave to the sea, explored by boat. Closer to town, Honda Bay has sandbars and islands for snorkelling, the Iwahig River is known for firefly watching in the evenings, and a wildlife rescue centre cares for local animals. El Nido and Coron, further north, are known for limestone cliffs and lagoons.
Seafood grilled over charcoal is everywhere: tuna, squid, lapu-lapu and giant prawns. Palawan's local oddity is tamilok, wood-boring clams eaten raw in vinegar, and cashew nuts, honey and coconut treats are made on the island. The dry season runs from November to May, and the rainy months from June to October bring heavy showers.
