Cebu City was founded by Spain in 1565 and is the oldest city of the Spanish period in the Philippines. Magellan's Cross, set in a small pavilion, marks the place where Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross in 1521, and the Basilica of the Santo Niño holds a small statue of the Christ child that is the focus of the city's biggest festival. Fort San Pedro, a triangular stone fort, stands by the harbour.
Mactan Island, linked by bridges, is where Lapulapu's forces killed Magellan in battle, and it has resorts and an airport. South of the city, Kawasan Falls tumbles through turquoise pools near Badian, and offshore Moalboal has reefs where huge schools of sardines drift. Bohol, with its Chocolate Hills, lies across the water to the south, and Malapascua, to the north, is known for thresher sharks.
Lechon, whole roast pig stuffed with lemongrass and spices, is the dish the island is known for, eaten with puso, rice wrapped in coconut leaves and boiled. Dried mango, dried fish called danggit and the pastry otap are the sweet and salty souvenirs of the markets. The Sinulog festival each January fills the streets with drums and dancers in honour of the Santo Niño.
