Experience the best of Coron

Coron is the main town of the Calamian Islands in northern Palawan, strung along the foot of steep hills on the south coast of Busuanga Island, facing the high limestone cliffs of Coron Island across the bay. A flight of steps leads from the town up Mount Tapyas, a hill with a cross at the top and a wide view over roofs, water and islands.

Coron Island is the home of the Tagbanua people, whose ancestral waters include Kayangan Lake and Barracuda Lake, two clear lakes in sunken limestone basins. Twin Lagoon is two pools divided by a limestone wall that swimmers can pass through, and Siete Pecados is a marine park of seven small islands for snorkelling. Maquinit Hot Springs, a saltwater pool on the shore south of town, is warmed by the earth. In Coron Bay, Japanese ships sunk in 1944 lie on the seabed.

Evenings in town belong to the waterfront, where fish and squid are grilled over charcoal and kinilaw is served with rice. Calm seas and clear skies come between November and April, while the rainy months, lasting into October, bring warm downpours and the occasional typhoon.
