El Nido sits between steep limestone cliffs and the sea at the northern end of Palawan, with Bacuit Bay opening in front of it. Fishing boats and dive shops line the shore. Offshore, dozens of islands and islets of jagged karst rise from clear green water in the Bacuit archipelago.
Island-hopping boats visit the Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon, enclosed by cliffs and best explored by kayak, the Secret Lagoon, Seven Commandos Beach and Helicopter Island, with snorkelling over coral. On the mainland, Nacpan Beach is a long arc of pale sand, and Taraw Cliff has a steep climb to a viewpoint over the bay. Forest and mangroves shelter hornbills and monitor lizards.
Seafood is the staple: grilled fish and squid, kinilaw, the Filipino raw-fish dish dressed with vinegar and calamansi, and rice at every meal, with coconut juice and fresh mango. The dry season from November to May is calmer for boating; the rains and typhoons arrive between June and October.
