Experience the best of Broome

Broome is a pearling town on the Kimberley coast of Western Australia, known for camel trains on Cable Beach, red cliffs and enormous tides.

Broome sits on a red-earth peninsula between Roebuck Bay and the Indian Ocean, a pearling port since the 1880s whose Chinatown streets still hold pearl shops and old tin-roofed buildings. Divers from Japan, China, Malaya and the Philippines worked the luggers here, and the Japanese cemetery records the men who died at sea. Sun Pictures, an open-air cinema dating from 1916, still shows films under the stars.

Cable Beach runs for 22 kilometres of white sand against turquoise water, and camels walk along it at sunset. At Gantheaume Point, red cliffs drop to the sea, and dinosaur footprints show in the rock at the lowest tides. North of town the Dampier Peninsula holds Aboriginal communities and the church at Beagle Bay, whose altar is decorated with mother-of-pearl.

Barramundi, prawns and mud crab are the local seafood, and the Kimberley grows mangoes. Broome's tides are among the biggest in Australia, and on certain full-moon nights the Staircase to the Moon appears as the rising moon lights the exposed mudflats of Roebuck Bay. The dry season, from May to October, brings clear sunny days; the wet season is hot and humid, with storms.
