Experience the best of Alexandria
Alexandria, Egypt's Mediterranean port, was founded by Alexander the Great and holds Roman ruins, a harbour fort and a modern library by the sea.

Alexander the Great founded the city in 331 BC, and for centuries it was the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt, with a great library and the Pharos, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The lighthouse fell to earthquakes, and the Citadel of Qaitbay, a fifteenth-century fort on its site, now guards the harbour mouth. The Corniche runs for miles along the bay in front of tall, weather-worn apartment blocks.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, beside the Eastern Harbour, is a tilted disc of granite and glass that echoes the ancient library. The Roman amphitheatre at Kom el-Dikka, Pompey's Pillar and the catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, where Greek, Roman and Egyptian styles mingle, show the city's ancient layers. The royal gardens at Montaza, east of the centre, run down to the beach.
Fish is the heart of the cooking, and the restaurants of the Anfushi district grill and fry the morning's catch, with shrimp, calamari and sea bream. Alexandrian liver, cooked with garlic, chilli and cumin, is a local classic, and old cafés in the centre serve coffee and pastries.
