On the western edge of the city, the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx rise from the desert plateau, with the step pyramid of Saqqara and the ruins of Memphis further south. Cairo's great museums, the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and the vast Grand Egyptian Museum beside the plateau, hold artefacts spanning thousands of years.
Islamic Cairo is a living gallery of domes and minarets. The Citadel of Saladin, crowned by the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, overlooks the city, the mosques of Al-Azhar and Sultan Hassan show centuries of craftsmanship, and the lanes of Khan el-Khalili bazaar overflow with lanterns, spices and brass. Coptic Cairo keeps ancient churches, among them the Hanging Church, beside a historic synagogue.
Street food is hearty and everywhere: koshari, ful medames, falafel made from fava beans, and sweet mint tea in old coffeehouses. A felucca sail on the Nile at sunset brings calm to the busiest day. The cooler months from autumn to spring are the most comfortable time to visit, and during Ramadan, whenever it falls, the old streets glow with colourful fanous lanterns and stay awake long after the sunset meal.
