The town stretches along the shore, from the older district of El Dahar with its souk and fish market to the marina at Sakkala and the resort strip to the south. Offshore, the reefs and islands of the Red Sea teem with colourful fish and coral gardens, and dolphins are sometimes seen, making snorkelling and diving the main draws.
Boat trips head to Giftun Island and its protected reserve, with white-sand beaches and clear shallows, while glass-bottom boats and semi-submarines show the reef to non-swimmers. Inland, the mountains and wadis of the Eastern Desert are explored by quad bike or jeep, often ending with dinner at a Bedouin camp under the stars.
Luxor's temples are within a long day's reach by road, and El Gouna, a lagoon town to the north, makes an easy outing. Grilled fish and seafood from the harbour, Egyptian mezze and fresh juices fill the local tables. The sun shines almost all year: winter is mild and pleasant, spring and autumn are warm and ideal for the water, and summer is hot but tempered by sea breezes.
