Safaga lies on the Red Sea coast of Egypt about sixty kilometres south of Hurghada, between the sea and the bare mountains of the Eastern Desert. It began as a phosphate port and still has a working harbour, and a string of resorts has grown up along the sandy bay. The water is clear, the reefs start close to shore, and steady winds make the area popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Boats take divers and snorkellers to offshore reefs such as Panorama Reef, where coral walls drop into deep water. Safaga has long been known for its black sand and mud treatments, said to ease skin and joint complaints. A road crosses the desert west to the Nile valley, and Luxor, with the temples of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, is a long day's excursion. Ancient Roman quarries survive in the hills of the Eastern Desert.
Seafood dominates the menus: grilled fish, shrimp and calamari with rice, lentils and salad, followed by sweet mint tea. Koshari, a pile of rice, lentils and pasta topped with tomato sauce and crisp onions, and ful, stewed fava beans, appear on every Egyptian menu. Almost no rain falls, and the winters are mild enough for the beach.
