Dahab stretches along the Gulf of Aqaba on the east coast of the Sinai Peninsula, a former Bedouin fishing village with a seafront promenade of cafés and dive shops. The coral reefs drop away close to shore, and the water is warm and clear. The mountains of Sinai rise behind the town, while the mountains of Saudi Arabia are visible across the gulf on a clear day.

Divers know Dahab for the Blue Hole, a sheer-sided hollow in the reef just north of town, and for the Canyon, a dive site with a narrow fissure in the coral. The shallow lagoon is a centre for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and snorkellers drift over reefs right off the beach. Mount Sinai and St Catherine's Monastery lie inland, within a couple of hours' drive.

Fish grilled on the beach, shakshuka, falafel and fresh juices are the order of the day, followed by sweet Bedouin tea served in small glasses at seafront cafés. Sunshine is almost constant, rain is rare, and the northerly winds that suit windsurfers blow much of the year.
