Experience the best of Aswan

Aswan is Egypt's serene southern city on the Nile, where feluccas glide between granite islands, Nubian villages and palm-fringed riverbanks.

The Nile is at its most beautiful here, broken by granite boulders and green islands. Elephantine Island holds ruins of ancient temples and colourful Nubian villages, Kitchener's Island is covered by a botanical garden, and on the west bank the Tombs of the Nobles are cut into the cliffs of Qubbet el-Hawa, while the domed Mausoleum of the Aga Khan stands on a desert hill further south.

The temple of Philae, dedicated to Isis, was moved stone by stone to a higher island and is magical when approached by boat. The Unfinished Obelisk lies in an ancient granite quarry, and the High Dam holds back the vast Lake Nasser. Further south, the colossal rock temples of Abu Simbel, built by Ramesses II and relocated to save them from the rising waters, are a classic early-morning trip.

The Nubian Museum explains the culture of the region, and villages on the west bank welcome visitors with brightly painted houses, henna and spiced tea. Nile cruises to Luxor begin or end here, stopping at Kom Ombo and Edfu. Winter is warm and sunny and summer fiercely hot, and twice a year, in February and October, the rising sun reaches deep into Abu Simbel to light the statues of its inner sanctuary.
