Itinerary
Visit the Sapporo Clock Tower, one of the city's most beloved landmarks. Built in 1878 during Hokkaido's pioneer era, this charming wooden building still chimes on the hour and houses a small museum on the city's early history.
Walk through Odori Park, a lush green belt running through the heart of downtown Sapporo. Stretching roughly 1.5 km, it offers fountains, flowerbeds and seasonal events, and is the main venue for the famous Sapporo Snow Festival.
Admire the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, an elegant red-brick neo-baroque landmark completed in 1888. Affectionately known as 'Akarenga' (Red Bricks), it is surrounded by gardens and ponds and remains a symbol of Sapporo's pioneer history.
See the Sapporo TV Tower standing at the eastern end of Odori Park. Completed in 1957, this 147-meter red tower is an icon of the city skyline, and its observation deck offers panoramic views over Odori Park and the surrounding mountains.
Visit Hokkaido Jingu (Hokkaido Shrine) in tranquil Maruyama Park, the most important Shinto shrine on the island. Founded in 1869, it enshrines the guardian deities of Hokkaido's development and is a peaceful spot surrounded by forest, famous for cherry blossoms in spring.
Ride the ropeway to the summit of Mt. Moiwa, rising over 500 meters above the city. The observation deck commands a sweeping panorama of Sapporo and is celebrated as one of Japan's finest night views, with the lights of the city spreading out below.
Explore Nijo Market, a lively downtown market that has served Sapporo for over a century. Narrow lanes are packed with stalls offering fresh Hokkaido seafood such as crab, sea urchin and salmon roe, alongside local produce and casual seafood-bowl eateries.
This botanical garden (北海道大学植物園, Hokkaidō Daigaku Shokubutsuen) close to Sapporo's city center belongs to Hokkaido University and primarily serves a scientific and educational purpose. The garden with its walking trails and lawns, however, is also a pleasant place to take a break or to have a (non-alcoholic) picnic. Established in 1886, the Botanic Garden preserves a small part of the forest which formerly covered the Ishikari Plain. In addition, there is an alpine garden, a greenhouse and a small Ainu museum. During the winter, only the greenhouse is open to the public.

About Sapporo
Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, is a grid-planned city of wide parks, an annual snow festival, miso ramen and mountains close behind.
Sapporo was laid out as a grid in the 1870s, when Japan's government developed the northern island, so its streets are wide and straight, split by Odori Park, a long green strip through the middle. The red-brick former Hokkaido government building and the white clock tower, both from the Meiji period, recall that era, and the Hokkaido Shrine lies in a wooded park in the west.
Top-ranked sights in Sapporo: Odori Park (Odori Koen), Susukino, Sapporo TV Tower.
