Itinerary

  1. The Otaru Canal is a classic staple when it comes to famous sightseeing spots of Hokkaido. Once the distribution hub of Hokkaido, it boasted a population that even surpassed that of Sapporo. At that time the canal was used to offload ships via barges, and was established to lengthen the distance that goods could be distributed. Eventually the canal was no longer necessary to serve its function once the docks were established and was to be landfilled. However it currently stands as a place for citizens and tourists alike to relax and enjoy with its promenades and gas lamps lighting the riverbanks.

  2. Otaru City's historical buildings of the early 20th century are now used as various resources for tourism. The Otaru Art Base located opposite the Otaru Canal across Rinkosen Street is one such facility. There are four historical buildings where 20 of the largest banks in Hokkaido were gathered, formerly the center of Hokkaido's economy known as "North Wall Street." What was the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch as seen in the picture is now home to the Nitori Museum of Art, and includes displays such as Japanese and foreign paintings, wood carvings, and more. In the basement you will find the Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass Gallery.

  3. If you're travelling for pleasure, then you'll want to enjoy gourmet and shopping. Both can be done at Otaru's Sakaimachi Dori Shopping Street, located on the inland side of Rinkosen Street, parallel to the Otaru Canal. It is a one-way street that stretches about 900 meters from North Wall Street to the Marchen Crossroads where you will find the Bank of Japan Otaru Branch. Both sides of the street are lined with old merchant shops and Western-style buildings. Nearby to the Otaru Canal, it is another very popular tourist spot.

  4. Otaru may be known for its nostalgic influence of historic Western buildings and glass crafts, but there is also a spot that conveys the history of Japan from long ago. One of these places is the Tanaka Sake Brewery, founded in 1899. Many types of alcoholic beverages are manufactured here, including plum wine, sweet sake, and of course the beloved local sake of Otaru, Takaragawa. Because the cool climate of Otaru allows for the manufacture of sake year-round, the Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkougura is a great place to visit at any time of the year.

  5. Anyone can enjoy strolling the various beautiful landscapes of historical Otaru. Overlooking this beautiful seaside city and the Sea of Japan is Mt. Tengu, about 15 minutes by car from the Otaru IC. The Mt. Tengu Ropeway can take you from the foot of the mountain to the very top, a total distance of 735 meters, in about 4 minutes. From the mountain summit you can even get a great view of the Shakotan Peninsula. Rope way price *roundtrip Adults: 1600 JPY Children: 800 JPY

  • 5Wonderful Day

Wonderful time with with a wonderful guide. A beautiful day in Otura. We saw the highlights and our guide, Hiro, was the perfect host. He had exceptional knowledge and delivered a culturally rich experience to us. Since retirement, we've taken dozens of tours, and this one strands out as a highlight. Great memories. Highly recommended.

  • 5Excellent private tour of Otaru with Roy

We had a fantastic day exploring Otaru with Roy. He was an excellent guide: extremely knowledgeable, very flexible, and able to share his expertise on a wide range of subjects, from the history of Otaru to nature and botany, as well as the sake production process. Roy adapted the itinerary to our interests and wishes throughout the day, which made the experience particularly enjoyable and personal. We started by taking the cable car up Mt. Tengu, followed by a very pleasant 30-minute walk around the summit. We then visited a local sake brewery, where we learned about the production process and had the opportunity to taste several different types of sake. Afterwards, we explored Otaru itself, including the lively shopping street, the famous canal, and the historic former financial district. Roy provided interesting explanations and context at every stop, which really helped us understand the history and character of the city. We were extremely happy with the whole experience and would highly recommend both this tour and Roy as a guide to anyone visiting Otaru.

Our guide Max had planned put the day very thoughtfully taking into account our interests . We enjoyed the day in Otaru with the canal cruise and sakaimachi street being the key highlights . We ended the tour with a quick trip to the last remaining sake factory in otaru . All in all would definitely recommend this day trip with Max

  • 5Highly recommended guide for Kyoto

We were very pleased with our 6 hour tour of Kyoto with Yoshi. He spoke very good English and explained well the sites we visited. He took us to a local ramen restaurant for lunch and to a less visited temple not on the tourist radar. He has a very fun personality and he shared stories about his life. He also took good pictures of us. Compared to other guides we had with this company and a different company, we found him superior.

About Otaru

Otaru is a canal port on Hokkaido's west coast, with old stone warehouses, glassworks, music boxes and a street of sushi restaurants.

Otaru grew rich in the late nineteenth century as a herring and shipping port, and the stone warehouses along its canal, now cafés, galleries and shops, date from that time. Gas lamps line the canal at dusk, and Sakaimachi Street, with its Meiji-era banks and glass shops, runs inland. Outside the Otaru Music Box Museum stands a steam clock that vents steam and sounds a whistle.
