About Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head Island is a South Carolina barrier island of wide beaches, live-oak forests, golf courses and salt marsh, with a Gullah heritage.
Hilton Head Island lies off the coast of South Carolina's Lowcountry, a barrier island shaped like a shoe, with about twenty kilometres of Atlantic beach on one side and salt marshes on the other. It is named for Captain William Hilton, who sighted its headland in 1663. Resort communities such as Sea Pines are planned among live oaks and pines, and the red-and-white striped lighthouse at Harbour Town is the island's emblem.
