About Orvieto
Orvieto is a hill town on a cliff of volcanic rock in Umbria, with a mosaic-fronted Gothic cathedral, underground caves and a long winemaking tradition.
Orvieto stands on a flat-topped plug of volcanic tuff, with sheer cliffs around it, above the Paglia valley in southern Umbria. Its cathedral, begun in 1290, has a Gothic façade of gold mosaics and spires, and inside the San Brizio chapel Luca Signorelli painted his vast Last Judgment around the turn of the sixteenth century. The Torre del Moro, a clock tower in the old streets, gives a long view across the roofs.
Top-ranked sights in Orvieto: Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo di Orvieto), St. Patrick’s Well (Pozzo di San Patrizio), Pozzo della Cava.
