Experience the best of Orvieto

Orvieto is a hill town on a cliff of volcanic rock in Umbria, with a mosaic-fronted Gothic cathedral, underground caves and a long winemaking tradition.

Orvieto stands on a flat-topped plug of volcanic tuff, with sheer cliffs around it, above the Paglia valley in southern Umbria. Its cathedral, begun in 1290, has a Gothic façade of gold mosaics and spires, and inside the San Brizio chapel Luca Signorelli painted his vast Last Judgment around the turn of the sixteenth century. The Torre del Moro, a clock tower in the old streets, gives a long view across the roofs.

Beneath the streets, hand-dug caves were used as wine cellars, olive presses and dovecotes, and guided visits go down into them. The Pozzo di San Patrizio, a deep well with twin spiral ramps, was dug in the sixteenth century for Pope Clement VII. Below the cliffs, the Etruscan necropolis of Crocifisso del Tufo has tombs built of tuff blocks. Civita di Bagnoregio lies a short way to the south, and Lake Bolsena to the south-west.

Orvieto Classico, a crisp white wine, has been made from the surrounding vineyards since the Middle Ages, and trattorias serve umbricelli pasta, wild boar, lentils, truffles and sliced porchetta. The town fills for the feast of Corpus Domini in early summer, and falls quiet in winter fog. Spring and autumn bring the best light.
