Itinerary

  1. The archway, originally part of the Lucerne train station built in 1896, was the only element to survive a devastating fire in 1971. Today, it stands as a protected landmark and a symbol of transience and change in Lucerne's cityscape. The inscription "Sic transit gloria mundi" reminds us of the impermanence of human achievements.

  2. Built between 1666 and 1677, the Jesuit Church is Switzerland's first major Baroque church. Constructed by the Jesuits during the Counter-Reformation, it aimed to strengthen the Catholic faith in the region. This magnificent structure remains a prominent example of Baroque sacred architecture and a defining feature of Lucerne’s cityscape.

    10 min

  3. The Spreuer Bridge, built in 1408, is one of Lucerne’s historic wooden bridges. Originally part of the city’s fortifications, it allowed the disposal of chaff ("Spreu") into the river. Adorned with 67 17th-century paintings depicting the "Dance of Death," it serves as a rare example of medieval art and architecture, showcasing Lucerne's rich history.

    10 min

  4. The Old Town of Lucerne is a well-preserved medieval center characterized by its charming squares, frescoed buildings, and narrow alleys. With landmarks like the Chapel Bridge and the Musegg Wall, it reflects the city’s rich history and serves as a vibrant hub of culture, shopping, and dining, blending tradition with modernity.

    20 min

  5. The Lion Monument, carved in 1821, commemorates the Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution in 1792. Depicting a dying lion, it symbolizes bravery and sacrifice. Mark Twain described it as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world," making it a poignant landmark in Lucerne’s history.

    15 min

  6. The Chapel Bridge, built in 1333, is Lucerne’s iconic wooden bridge and one of the oldest in Europe. It features 17th-century triangular paintings depicting the city’s history. Though partially destroyed by fire in 1993, it was restored and remains a symbol of Lucerne’s heritage and resilience.

About Lucerne

Lucerne is a compact Swiss lake city with a covered wooden bridge, a medieval wall and a ring of mountains, in the heart of Switzerland.

Lucerne sits at the northern end of Lake Lucerne, where the Reuss River flows out under two old wooden bridges. The Chapel Bridge, with its stone water tower and painted roof panels, dates from the fourteenth century, although it was partly rebuilt after a fire in 1993. The old town has painted house fronts, squares and the twin-spired Jesuit church, and the Museggmauer, a wall with nine towers, closes it to the north.

Top-ranked sights in Lucerne: Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), Lucerne Old Town, Mt. Pilatus.
