About Haarlem
Haarlem is a compact historic city west of Amsterdam, with a Gothic church on its market square, Frans Hals paintings and almshouse courtyards.
Haarlem is the capital of North Holland, a canal-lined city of gabled houses on the River Spaarne, a short train ride west of Amsterdam. The Grote Markt is its large market square, framed by the Gothic church of St Bavo, whose great organ was played by the young Mozart in 1766, and by the stately town hall. The painter Frans Hals lived and worked here, and the Frans Hals Museum displays his group portraits.
