Experience the best of Rotterdam
Rotterdam is a modern Dutch port city rebuilt after 1940, known for bold architecture, a huge harbour, the Cube Houses, a market hall and waterfront views.

Rotterdam was bombed in May 1940 and rebuilt in a modern style, so it is unlike the old canal towns of the Netherlands: glass towers, bridges and daring architecture line the Nieuwe Maas river, which is crossed by the white Erasmus Bridge. It has Europe's largest seaport, and the harbour can be toured by boat. Delfshaven, a small quarter of old canals that survived the bombs, is where the Pilgrim Fathers left in 1620.
The Cube Houses, tilted yellow cubes by the architect Piet Blom, stand near the Markthal, an arched market hall whose ceiling is painted with giant fruit and flowers. The Euromast tower looks over the harbour, and the Van Nelle Factory, a glass-and-steel factory of the 1920s, is a World Heritage site. At Kinderdijk, about 15 kilometres east, nineteen windmills stand along the polder canals, and Delft, Gouda and The Hague are short train rides away.
Dutch classics such as herring with onions, bitterballen, stroopwafels and cheese from nearby Gouda are sold at the market and in the cafés, while Surinamese, Indonesian and Turkish kitchens reflect the city's mix of communities. Genever, the juniper spirit that gave gin its name, is distilled in neighbouring Schiedam. The wind off the North Sea keeps the climate mild.
