Groningen has been a trading town since the Middle Ages, and the Martinitoren, a tower almost a hundred metres high, rises over the Grote Markt, the main square. The university, founded in 1614, means that a large share of the population is young, and bicycles seem to outnumber cars on the narrow streets. The Groninger Museum, in a bright, angular building on a canal, mixes art, design and local history.

The Noorderplantsoen, an old park of ponds and paths, lies on the former ramparts. North of the city the land is flat farmland dotted with small Romanesque churches on raised mounds, and beyond it lies the Wadden Sea coast, a World Heritage site of mudflats and salt marshes where guided mudflat walks are made at low tide. A seal rescue centre at Pieterburen and ferries to Schiermonnikoog, an almost car-free island, are on the coast.

Groninger koek, a dark spice cake, and metworst, a dry-cured sausage, are old local foods, and the city's many cafés pour jenever, the Dutch gin, and local beers. Winters are mild and damp, and the sea wind is steady.
