Utrecht began as a Roman fort and has been a religious and trading centre ever since, and its heart is the Dom Tower, a 112-metre church tower that is the tallest in the Netherlands. The Oudegracht, the old canal, runs through the middle of the city with quays set below street level, and the cellars of the old warehouses along the water are now cafés and restaurants. The university, founded in 1636, fills the streets with students and bicycles.
Museum Speelklok shows self-playing instruments, from music boxes to fairground organs, and the Dick Bruna House, beside the Centraal Museum, honours the Utrecht-born creator of Miffy. The Rietveld Schröder House, a 1924 De Stijl house with sliding walls, is a World Heritage site. De Haar Castle, a neo-Gothic castle, stands among woods west of the city, and the Utrecht Hill Ridge to the east has forest and heath.
Pancakes, bitterballen and stroopwafels are the sweet and savoury snacks of the Dutch table, and the canal-side cafés set their tables out on the old wharves. The terraces fill from spring to early autumn, and winters are grey and mild.
