Experience the best of Amsterdam
Amsterdam rings its golden-age centre with tree-lined canals, gabled houses and bridges, packing great art and easy cycling into a compact city.

The canal ring, dug in the seventeenth century, curves around the old centre in concentric arcs: Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, lined with tall merchants' houses. The Jordaan, just west, is a maze of small canals, courtyards, brown cafés and independent shops, and the Anne Frank House stands on the Prinsengracht at its edge.
Museumplein gathers the Rijksmuseum, with Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's quiet interiors, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk for modern art. Vondelpark is the city's green lung, Dam Square holds the Royal Palace, and the Nine Streets are made for browsing. A canal cruise shows the city from water level, and ferries across the IJ reach the creative quarter of Noord.
Snack on herring from street stands, warm stroopwafels, bitterballen with a beer, or an Indonesian rijsttafel, a legacy of colonial history. Spring brings tulips to the bulb fields nearby, summer evenings stretch late on canal-side terraces, and winter is cosy, with skating on the canals in a rare hard frost. Zaanse Schans and Haarlem make easy trips out.
