Experience the best of The Hague
The Hague, on the North Sea coast of South Holland, is the Dutch seat of government, home to international courts, art museums and a long beach.

The Hague is not the capital of the Netherlands, which is Amsterdam, but the government and parliament sit here, around the Binnenhof, a medieval complex of buildings beside a pond, the Hofvijver, with the Knights' Hall at its centre. The Mauritshuis, a small museum beside the pond, holds Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp.
The Peace Palace, completed in 1913, houses the International Court of Justice, and other courts and tribunals have made the city an international centre of law. The Kunstmuseum has a large collection of Mondrian, and the Panorama Mesdag is a circular painting of the seaside from 1881. Scheveningen, a beach resort with a pier, lies a short tram ride away, and Delft and Leiden are close.
Raw herring with onions, and kibbeling, fried pieces of cod, are eaten at the Scheveningen harbour, and Indonesian rijsttafel reflects the many Dutch families with roots in the former colony. Haagse hopjes are coffee-flavoured sweets. The dunes at Meijendel are crossed by walking paths. Tulips bloom in the nearby fields in April.
