Haarlem is the capital of North Holland, a canal-lined city of gabled houses on the River Spaarne, a short train ride west of Amsterdam. The Grote Markt is its large market square, framed by the Gothic church of St Bavo, whose great organ was played by the young Mozart in 1766, and by the stately town hall. The painter Frans Hals lived and worked here, and the Frans Hals Museum displays his group portraits.

Teylers Museum, which opened in 1784, is the oldest museum in the Netherlands and shows fossils, instruments and drawings in a grand oval hall. The hofjes, courtyard almshouses with quiet gardens, are tucked behind the streets, and the windmill De Adriaan stands on the Spaarne. To the west, the dunes and beaches of Zandvoort and Bloemendaal run along the North Sea, and in spring the bulb fields near Lisse bloom in stripes of colour.

Bitterballen, crisp-fried meat croquettes, pickled herring, stroopwafels and Dutch cheeses fill the cafés around the Grote Markt. Haarlem gave its name to Harlem in New York. The cycling is flat, the weather changeable, spring is tulip season, and summer evenings stay light well into the night.
