About Hannover
Hannover is the capital of Lower Saxony, a green city of Baroque gardens, lakes and a red line through the centre that leads walkers to its sights.
Hannover was heavily rebuilt after the Second World War, but its Baroque past survives in the Herrenhausen Gardens, laid out in the seventeenth century for the electors of Hanover, who later became kings of Great Britain. The New Town Hall, a Wilhelmine building with a domed tower, has a curved lift that carries visitors up for a view. A red line painted along the pavements, the Red Thread, links thirty-six sights on a walk of about four kilometres.
