Itinerary
Dedicated to San Gerlando, patron saint of the city, the church has a history that dates back to the 11th century, when Agrigento was under Norman rule. Let's discover the story of this church!
The Artists’ Staircase, built in 2017, stands out for its colorful decorations and installations that transform the steps into true works of art. Born as a work of urban redevelopment and designed by the Agrigento association Onlus Culturart, this staircase is considered a true work of art and is among the sixteen most colorful staircases in the world.
The Church of Santo Spirito in Agrigento is part of the Cistercian Monastery of the same name, which was founded in the 13th century by the noblewoman Marchisia Prefoglio, whom I will tell you about later. The Gothic-style church has a facade decorated with a central rose window and medieval architectural elements, typical of Sicily in that period.
The Porta di Ponte, dating back to the 9th century, was the most important entrance gate to the city of Agrigento, which overlooked the Via Atenea. Originally equipped with a drawbridge, it was surmounted by a Gothic arch with the coat of arms of Frederick III of Aragon, king of Sicily from 1296 to 1337.
The Belvedere Arancio in Agrigento is one of the most suggestive panoramic points of the city. This place is also called Belvedere Kolymbethra, being close to the Garden of Kolymbethra which I will tell you about later. It is located near the historic center, in the upper part of Agrigento, and offers a breathtaking view of the famous Valley of the Temples and the Sicilian coast.
The Regional Archaeological Museum “Pietro Griffo” of Agrigento is one of the main archaeological museums in Sicily, with a collection that documents in detail the history and evolution of the city of Agrigento, formerly known as Akragas, and its territory
The Valley of the Temples is one of the most important and spectacular archaeological sites in the world, a UNESCO heritage site. This archaeological park is home to a series of ancient temples, built during the Greek domination in Sicily, which date back mainly to the 5th century BC. A must do when in Agrigento!
The Garden of Kolymbetra is a 6-hectare green oasis located in the heart of the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. This garden is famous for its variety of plant species, including citrus, almond, olive and Mediterranean scrub plants. I

About Agrigento
Agrigento is a hilltop city on Sicily's south coast, best known for the Valley of the Temples, a ridge of Greek temples standing above the sea.
Agrigento looks out to the Mediterranean from a hill on Sicily's southern coast. Greek colonists founded it around 580 BC as Akragas, and the poet Pindar called it the fairest city of mortals. The Valley of the Temples, a World Heritage site just below the modern town, is a ridge of Doric temples from the fifth century BC; the best preserved is the Temple of Concordia, saved because it was later turned into a church.
Top-ranked sights in Agrigento: Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), House Museum of Soap (Casa Museo del Sapone), Kolymbetra Garden (Giardino della Kolymbethra).
