Agrigento looks out to the Mediterranean from a hill on Sicily's southern coast. Greek colonists founded it around 580 BC as Akragas, and the poet Pindar called it the fairest city of mortals. The Valley of the Temples, a World Heritage site just below the modern town, is a ridge of Doric temples from the fifth century BC; the best preserved is the Temple of Concordia, saved because it was later turned into a church.
The Temple of Juno stands on the ridge's edge, the vast Temple of Olympian Zeus lies in ruins, with a replica of a giant stone telamon figure on the ground, and the Kolymbethra, a sunken garden of citrus and olive trees, shelters part of the valley. The Archaeological Museum holds Greek vases and sculpture. The white marl cliff of Scala dei Turchi is a short drive west, and the Greek ruins and beach of Eraclea Minoa lie further along.
Sicilian sweets are the pride here: almond pastries, cannoli and cassata, with a folk festival in late winter marking the almond blossom. Grilled fish, caponata, arancini and Nero d'Avola red wine fill the tables. Spring brings wildflowers and mild weather, the summers are hot, and the almond trees flower in February.
