Highlights
Our representative will pick you from your hotel or cruise ship for a tour of Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples at Abu Simbelز The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known. The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. They serve as a lasting monument to the king and his queen Nefertari, and commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Their huge external rock relief figures have become iconic. The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968 on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir. The relocation of the temples was necessary or they would have been submerged during the creation of Lake Nasser, the massive artificial water reservoir formed after the building of the Aswan High Dam on the River Nile.

Itinerary
Explore the majestic Abu Simbel, site of two temples built by the Egyptian king Ramses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE). In ancient times the area was at the southern frontier of pharaonic Egypt, facing Nubia. The four colossal statues of Ramses in front of the main temple are spectacular examples of ancient Egyptian art. By means of a complex engineering feat in the 1960s, the temples were salvaged from the rising waters of the Nile River caused by erection of the Aswan High Dam. Carved out of a sandstone cliff on the west bank of the Nile, south of Korosko, the temples were unknown to the outside world until their rediscovery in 1813 by the Swiss researcher Johann Burckhardt. They were first explored in 1817 by the early Egyptologist Giovanni Belzoni.

About Aswan
Aswan is Egypt's serene southern city on the Nile, where feluccas glide between granite islands, Nubian villages and palm-fringed riverbanks.
The Nile is at its most beautiful here, broken by granite boulders and green islands. Elephantine Island holds ruins of ancient temples and colourful Nubian villages, Kitchener's Island is covered by a botanical garden, and on the west bank the Tombs of the Nobles are cut into the cliffs of Qubbet el-Hawa, while the domed Mausoleum of the Aga Khan stands on a desert hill further south.
