Zion National Park protects Zion Canyon, a gorge cut by the Virgin River through cliffs of cream, pink and red sandstone that rise hundreds of metres. The Mormon pioneers who settled here in the 1860s named it Zion, a place of refuge, and it became a national park in 1919. Great monoliths such as the Court of the Patriarchs, the Great White Throne and Angels Landing line the canyon.
Walks range from the paved Riverside Walk to the Narrows, a hike up the Virgin River between towering walls, and the narrow ridge of Angels Landing. The Zion–Mount Carmel Highway runs east through a tunnel more than a kilometre long, opened in 1930, to Checkerboard Mesa. The Kolob Canyons section to the north-west has red fingers of rock, and Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon's North Rim are within a few hours' drive.
Springdale, the town at the south entrance, has cafés serving burgers and Mexican dishes, and Utah scones, fried bread served with honey butter, are a regional treat. Cottonwood trees turn gold in late October, wildflowers bloom in spring, and summers are very hot while winter snow dusts the rims.
