Williamsburg lies between the James and York rivers in eastern Virginia and was the capital of the Virginia colony from 1699 to 1780. The restored historic area stretches along Duke of Gloucester Street from the Capitol to the College of William and Mary, with reconstructed buildings, costumed interpreters, taverns and workshops. Bruton Parish Church, from the early 18th century, stands on the same street.
The Wren Building at the College of William and Mary, founded in 1693, is the oldest college building in continuous use in the United States. Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America, founded in 1607, lies a short drive west along the Colonial Parkway, and Yorktown, where the British surrendered in 1781 at the end of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War, lies on the other side. Together they form the Historic Triangle. A large theme park and a water park lie on the edge of town.
Virginia ham, peanuts, Brunswick stew, oysters, crab cakes and spoonbread are the tastes of the region. Spring brings azaleas, summers are hot and humid, autumn is mild, and the historic area is decorated with wreaths and fruit at Christmas.
