Westchester County lies immediately north of New York City, between the Hudson River on the west and Long Island Sound on the east, and its towns range from the city of Yonkers to small villages in rolling, wooded hills. White Plains is the county seat. Parks, reservoirs and nature preserves lie among the suburbs, and the old Croton Aqueduct, which once carried water to the city, is now a walking trail along the river.

Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow on the Hudson are tied to Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and his home Sunnyside, the Dutch mill of Philipsburg Manor, the Gothic mansion of Lyndhurst and Kykuit, the Rockefeller family estate, can all be visited. Rockefeller State Park Preserve has carriage roads in woodland, and Playland, an Art Deco amusement park of 1928 at Rye, stands beside the Sound.

Italian delis, Greek diners and Hudson Valley farm stands set the tone of the local table, with apples and cider in autumn. Views of the river's wide reach and the Palisades are a constant, the autumn foliage is bright, and winters bring snow.
