West Palm Beach lies on the mainland shore of Lake Worth Lagoon, facing the barrier island of Palm Beach across the water. It was founded in 1894 by the railway developer Henry Flagler as a town for the workers who built his grand hotels on the island, and the Flagler Museum, in his former mansion Whitehall across the lagoon on Palm Beach, shows that era. Clematis Street and the waterfront are the city's centre.

The Norton Museum of Art holds a broad collection, and the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens lie nearby. Peanut Island, a small park island in the inlet, has a Cold War bunker built for President Kennedy, and Singer Island has ocean beaches. Lion Country Safari lies to the west, and the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, at the edge of the Everglades, is a wetland of alligators and wading birds.

Seafood, stone crab in season, Cuban sandwiches and key lime pie are the usual order, and Worth Avenue across the bridge has smart cafés. The weather is warm all year, with a dry season from December to April and humid, stormy summers.
