Experience the best of Turin
Turin is the elegant Piedmont capital below the Alps, a city of arcaded avenues, royal palaces, a famous Egyptian museum, chocolate and vermouth.

Turin was the first capital of unified Italy, from 1861 to 1865, and before that the seat of the Savoy dynasty, whose baroque palaces and wide arcaded streets still define the centre. Piazza Castello holds the Royal Palace and Palazzo Madama, and Piazza San Carlo is a grand square with twin churches. The Mole Antonelliana, a tower topped by a spire, houses the National Cinema Museum, and the cathedral keeps the Shroud of Turin.
The Egyptian Museum holds one of the largest collections of Egyptian antiquities outside Egypt. The Venaria Reale, a Savoy hunting palace, stands just north-west, and the basilica of Superga crowns a hill east of the city. The Po runs beside the Parco del Valentino, with its castle, and the Alps rise to the west, with ski resorts in valleys that hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics. The Langhe hills and their vineyards lie an hour or so south.
Turin gave the world the gianduiotto, a hazelnut chocolate, and bicerin, a layered drink of coffee, chocolate and cream, is served in old cafés. Modern vermouth was first made here in the 18th century, and the aperitivo hour is a ritual. Agnolotti, filled pasta, bagna cauda, a hot garlic and anchovy dip, and Barolo from the Langhe are classics. Autumn is white-truffle season in nearby Alba.
