Tucson lies in a desert valley in southern Arizona, surrounded by the Santa Catalina, Rincon, Tucson and Santa Rita mountains and by forests of tall saguaro cactus. The historic downtown has adobe barrios, Mexican-influenced architecture and the University of Arizona. Mission San Xavier del Bac, a white 18th-century Spanish church on the southern edge of the city, is known as the White Dove of the Desert.
Saguaro National Park has two districts, on either side of the city. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, part zoo and part botanical garden, shows the desert's wildlife, and an aviation museum beside a desert yard of stored military planes shows hundreds of aircraft. The Mount Lemmon highway climbs from desert to pine forest in an hour's drive, and Sabino Canyon has streams and trails.
In 2015 UNESCO named Tucson a City of Gastronomy, in part for desert crops such as tepary beans and mesquite flour. Winters are mild and sunny, summers very hot, and monsoon storms arrive from July to September. Sonoran hot dogs, wrapped in bacon and served in a soft roll with beans, chimichangas and carne seca are local favourites.
