Experience the best of Trieste
Trieste is an Adriatic port on Italy's border with Slovenia, a city of Habsburg-era palaces, old coffeehouses and a great square that opens onto the sea.

Trieste was the Roman town of Tergeste and became the main seaport of the Habsburg empire after it was declared a free port in 1719. Its grand centre dates from that period: Piazza Unità d'Italia, a vast square of palaces with one side open to the water, the Canal Grande, a short canal lined with cafés and a church, and the grid of the Borgo Teresiano. Above the old town, the cathedral of San Giusto and a castle crown a hill, with a Roman theatre below.
Miramare Castle, built for the Archduke Maximilian on a headland, stands a few kilometres up the coast. Behind the city rises the Karst plateau, dotted with osmize, farm taverns that pour their own wine, and with caves such as the Grotta Gigante. Slovenia and the green coast of Istria are a short drive away. The bora, a strong cold wind, blows down from the plateau in winter.
Trieste is Italy's coffee port, and it has its own vocabulary: order a nero for an espresso and a capo for a macchiato. Jota, a bean and sauerkraut soup, boiled ham with horseradish and presnitz, a rolled pastry, show the Central European influence. The Barcolana sailing regatta fills the bay in October, and the Karst wines, Vitovska and Terrano, suit the seafood.
