Tortuguero is a small village on a strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and a network of rainforest canals in Limón province. No road reaches it, so boats and small planes are the only ways in. The national park beside it, created in 1975, protects beach, lagoon, swamp and tall rainforest, and it is one of the wettest corners of the country.
Green turtles nest on the dark sand from about July to October, and leatherbacks come ashore earlier in the year. Boat trips and kayaks along the narrow channels bring sightings of howler and spider monkeys, sloths, caimans, toucans and herons. Cerro Tortuguero, a small volcanic cone at the northern end of the park, is a short climb with a view over the canals and the sea.
Meals on the Caribbean coast follow Afro-Caribbean tradition: rice and beans simmered in coconut milk, fish in coconut sauce, fried plantain, and patí, a spiced meat pastry. It rains in every month here, though February, March, September and October are the drier ones, and the rain keeps the forest thick and green.
