Experience the best of Tongyeong

Tongyeong sits on a peninsula on the south coast, facing a sea scattered with islands, and is sometimes called the Naples of Korea. In the 1590s Admiral Yi Sun-sin based the Korean fleet near here, and his victories over the Japanese navy, including the battle off Hansan Island, are remembered at Chungnyeolsa shrine and the Jeseungdang hall on the island.

A cable car on Mireuksan mountain rises above the harbour for views of the islands, and the hillside lanes of Dongpirang are covered in murals. Jungang Market and the waterfront are the working heart of town. Boats run out to the islands of Hallyeo Maritime National Park, and Geoje Island is linked to the mainland by bridge.

Chungmu gimbap, thin rolls of rice wrapped in seaweed and served with spicy squid and radish kimchi on the side, is the city's famous snack, and honey-filled buns and fresh oysters are also local. The sea is calm and bright on spring days, and seafood restaurants line the harbour.
