Jeju is a volcanic island off the south coast of South Korea, dominated by Hallasan, the highest mountain in the country at 1,947 metres, whose crater holds a small lake. The island's lava tubes and cones are a World Heritage Site, and Seongsan Ilchulbong, a tuff cone rising from the sea at the eastern tip, is a popular place to watch the sunrise. Jeju City is the main town in the north, and Seogwipo lies on the south coast.

Manjanggul, a long lava tube, can be walked through in part, and waterfalls such as Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang drop near Seogwipo. Black basalt walls divide the fields, and dol hareubang, stone statues with bulbous noses, stand at crossroads. The haenyeo, women divers who harvest seafood without breathing equipment, are a tradition recognised by UNESCO, and the small island of Udo, offshore, is reached by ferry. Walking routes known as the Olle trails circle the coast.

Tangerines and the hallabong citrus fruit grow in the orchards, black pork is grilled at the table, and abalone porridge, grilled mackerel and raw fish are other local dishes. In spring yellow canola flowers cover the fields, summer is humid with a rainy spell, and autumn brings silvergrass to the volcanic cones.
